Griffons split with UNO on final day of regular season

With a split on the final day of the regular season against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks the Missouri Western baseball team earns the 5th seed in next week’s MIAA Tournament. Behind seven strong innings from Nik Jurado the Griffons earned a 6-3 victory in game one before falling in the series finale 13-2. The Griffons finish the regular season 25-23 and 24-19 in MIAA play.

GAME 1: MWSU 6, UNO 3
Western used a two run third and three run fifth to come away with a 6-3 victory against the Mavericks. Spencer Shockley gave the Griffons the lead in the third blasting his fifth home run of the season giving the Griffons a 3-2 lead.

The Mavs battled back in the fourth tying the score when Tyler Davies singled to right field scoring Mark Waldron. In the fifth Western used two hits to score three runs. Shockley hit a single scoring Nate Jones while Kyle Peterson singled up the middle scoring Jason Solma and Shockley.

That was all Jurado would need as he shut down UNO the rest of the game. Jurado went all seven innings improving to 7-2 on the season. He scattered seven hits while striking out three. Shockley went 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

Derek Landis falls to 3-4 for UNO going 4.2 innings giving up four hits and four earned runs. Waldron and Davies each had two hits in the contest.

GAME 2: UNO 13, MWSU 2
The Mavericks jumped all over Oliver Kadey and the Griffons in the final game of the four game series. UNO scored 10 runs in the first four innings claiming a 10-2 lead after four. The Mavericks scored three in the final two innings to claim an 11 run lead ending the game due to a run rule.

The Griffons had five hits with David Chew going 2-3. Peterson and Collette each scored a run while Peterson and Andrew Pieper each had one RBI.

UNO had 16 hits with Brady Hohl and Waldron going 3-4. Hohl scored four runs and had four RBI while Waldron scored two runs and had four RBI.

Kadey falls to 4-5 on the season giving up two hits and three earned runs.

Matt Tew improves to 5-1 for UNO going seven innings giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out three. UNO finishes the season 32-18 overall and 28-16 in MIAA play. They will be the 3rd seed in the MIAA Tournament.

The Griffons will play at 11:00 am on Thursday, May 12 against Fort Hays State University in the first game of the MIAA Tournament in an elimination game. The game will be played at Community America Ball Park in Kansas City, Kan. Fort Hays State eliminated the Griffons the last time they were in the tournament which was in 2008.
