Rock Port Shelter Activated; Volunteers Needed

A Red Cross shelter in Rock Port was activated Friday afternoon after a family six people requested shelter there.  The shelter is located at the Rock Port United Methodist Church at 505 East Cass Street in Rock Port.  They could use your help.

A mother, father and four boys from six to 16 years old were flooded out of their home south of Langdon.  They’ve been camping out in the bluffs in the Brickyard Hill Wildlife Area ever since.

The boys’ mother suffers from asthma.  After more than two weeks in the heat she and her family sought shelter.

On Sunday, Atchison County Emergency Management put out a request for volunteers.  Linda Herron says they have been busy activating the church as a shelter and preparing meals.  They could use just about any kind of help you’d like to offer.

If you’d like to volunteer, call the Rock Port United Methodist Church at (660) 744-2101, Pastor Bruce Jeffries at (660)744-3000, or Linda Herron (660) 253-0323.

If you need shelter because of flooding, please contact the American Red Cross (816) 232-8439 or (800) 378-8439.
