Quake Shakes East Coast

(Washington, DC) — People on the East Coast were rattled Tuesday afternoon by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake.  The United States Geological Survey says the strong quake was centered nearly 90 miles southwest of Washington, DC between Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia.  The temblor could be felt from the nation’s capital all the way north to Toronto. There are no reports of injury or major damage so far from the strongest earthquake to hit Virginia since 1897.  Click on the graphic to see the USGS analysis of the quake.

The USGS initially rated the temblor at 5.8, then upgraded it to 5.9, before downgrading it back to 5.8.

The quake prompted the evacuation of numerous buildings in Washington, DC including the White House. The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia was also evacuated.

Courthouses and city hall in New York City also were evacuated due to the temblor and work was halted at the World Trade Center construction site.

Airline flights are delayed at major airports serving Washington, DC, New York and Philadelphia due to the earthquake.

The control towers at JFK International Airport in New York City and New Jersey’s Newark Airport were evacuated and airport authorities inspected the towers and runways for possible damage. Those two airports are now reopened. Amtrak train service along the East Coast is running behind schedule due to the earthquake.

National monuments in Washington, DC are closed for inspection following the quake. National Park Service officials say they’re checking for any possible damage.

There also were reports of toppled chimneys and cracked walls in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens. Officials in New York’s Dutchess County reported structural damage to some buildings.

Some people attending Tuesday’s Cleveland Indians home baseball game said they could feel the stadium swaying due to the earthquake. The game continued with no delay.
