Western sits in second at Fort Hays; Cooley has individual lead

Missouri Western senior golfer Kristen Cooley leads after the first round of the FHSU Invitational in Hays, Kan. The tournament is being held at the Smoky Hill County Club, a par-71 course. Cooley fired a 79 on the first day leading by three strokes over Kiley Johansen of Fort Hays State (82).

As a team the Griffons shot 348 and trail host school Fort Hays State (342) by six strokes. Northwest Missouri State is 13 strokes (255) back in third. Iowa Western Community College sits in fourth place firing a day one total of 369.

The three other team scorers for the Griffons are all in the top 15 after the first day. Natalie Bird is tied for fifth after a round of 85. Shelby Stone is tied for 11th with a 90 while Darcy Smith sits in 15th after a round of 94. Casi Webb sits in a tie for 16th after a 95 in the opening round.

The final round of the tournament will be a shotgun start, beginning at 9 am on Tuesday morning.
