Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon has died following a 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during Sunday’s IndyCar Series season finale.
The 33-year-old Wheldon was airlifted to University Medical Center after the fiery pile-up where he later passed away. The crash took place on Lap 12 of the IZOD IndyCar World Championships.
The race was stopped and drivers did a five-lap memorial tribute to Wheldon.
Wheldon, who is from Emberton, England, was the 2005 series champion and was competing in just his third IndyCar race of the season. He won 16 races in his nine-year IndyCar career, including this year’s “Greatest Spectacle In Racing.”
