Pinkel Reprimanded, Suspended For DWI Arrest

The University of Missouri has reprimanded football coach Gary Pinkel following his arrest for DWI in Columbia.

Pinkel has been suspended for one week without pay.

He will also receive a one year salary freeze, donate one week’s pay to the MU Wellness Center and perform 50 hours of community service by June 30th, 2012.

If the Tigers qualify for a bowl game this season, Pinkel will not receive a bonus. In addition, he will issue a public letter of apology. Athletic Director Mike Alden says any additional incidents in the future would warrant a harsher penalty.

Linebackers coach Dave Steckel will serve as Mizzou’s acting head coach during Saturday’s game against Texas Tech.

Boone County sheriff deputies arrested Pinkel Wednesday night for DWI. Pinkel posted a $500 bond and was released from the Boone County Jail.

Deputies pulled Pinkel over for lane and signal violations on Keene Street near Broadway around 10 p.m. The sheriff’s department said this is Pinkel’s first offense, and deputies said he was cooperative.

Pinkel offered a public apology Thursday in a written statement. “I accept full responsibility for my actions and will abide by whatever course of action our leadership deems appropriate,” Pinkel said.

The coach said he was stopped by deputies after a post-practice dinner with friends.

“First and foremost, I am very disappointed in myself for my lack of judgment in this instance,” Pinkel said. “Nobody should drink and drive, including me. My staff and I constantly reinforce with each of our players the importance of not putting yourself into a position such as this. I did not follow that here and for that, I sincerely apologize to the University of Missouri, to our administration, to the Board of Curators and to our fans.”
