Freshman Maggie Marnin recorded her first double-double as Northwest Missouri State picked up their first win of the season over Missouri Valley 70-61 on Saturday night to close out the Winstead-Reeves Classic.
Northwest (1-3) has seen steady improvement in their first four games, but have lacked the final result. Saturday night the Bearcats put together two halves as four Bearcats scored in double figures to drop Missouri Valley (2-6) in non-conference tournament action.
Marnin has showed continued improvement in the post for the Bearcats as she scored 10 points and added 14 rebounds -10 defensive rebounds- and four blocks in the win. Marnin also earned a spot on the all-Tournament team with Tara Roach.
Roach also added 10 points and was again one rebound shy of her first double-double finishing with nine.
Northwest took a slim 32-27 lead into halftime, and came out firing in the second shooting 91 percent from the free throw line. The Bearcats would extend their to 20 with just over 5 minutes to play as Ashleigh Nelson completed a three-point play at the free throw line.
Nelson and Shelly Martin tied for a game high 15 points each as the pair also knocked down two three-pointers each.
Northwest continues tournament action as they head west for the Oahu Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Bearcats open play on Thanksgiving taking on St. Augustine’s followed by a Friday matchup with Hillsdale.
