Northwest’s Kilgore earns All-America honors

Northwest Missouri State senior linebacker, Chad Kilgore was named American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Team announced on Tuesday.

Kilgore led the Bearcats in tackles for the second straight season with 123 which was third best in the MIAA. The Orrick, Mo., native also led Northwest with 11.5 tackles for loss and finished with five games of 11 or more tackles. He finished with 2.5 sacks and one interception on the season as well.

The senior helped lead Northwest to the playoffs all four season and the eighth consecutive overall. The Bearcats finished the season 11-3 falling in the National Quarterfinals to Pittsburg State, who will play in the National Championship game this Saturday. Kilgore and the Bearcats claimed the 2009 national title as a sophomore starter on the Northwest defense.

With Kilgore’s honor, Northwest has the longest current streak with a player selected to the AFCA Division II Coaches’ All-America Team at 16 straight seasons, from 1996 to present. The Bearcats have been represented 17 times by 13 different players, fourth most in NCAA Division II.

The AFCA’s Division II All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA’s nine districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts prior to a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.
