Joplin Cop Quits Amid Accusations of Looting in Aftermath of Tornado

A former officer with the Joplin Police Department quit the department amid accusations he stole whiskey from a liquor store in the aftermath of the May 22 tornado.

The “Joplin Globe” obtained reports that show the 13-year veteran was the subject of both criminal and internal affairs probes, but no charges were ever filed.

Sergeant Gabe Allen reportedly told officials he thought the owner of the liquor store was giving away the whiskey.

Records show Allen resigned on November 16.

Ironically, that was one day after his family received a special holiday treatment of their home by The Weather Channel in recognition of his efforts helping others the night of the tornado.

The Globe reports City Prosecutor Tricia Gould decided at the time not to file a charge against Allen even though he reportedly admitted to Lewis that he took “three or four bottles” of Jack Daniels whiskey from the destroyed store’s premises. Lewis wrote that Gould advised him that she would not be filing a charge because the business did not suffer a financial loss and there was no proof that Allen took the liquor to deprive the owner as required by city ordinance.

Allen apparently still faced possible disciplinary action from an internal affairs probe when he resigned. City Manager Mark Rohr confirms Allen quit “early in the disciplinary process.”
