Cuba, Mo. Nursing Home Bookkeeper Sentenced For Stealing From Residents

A former bookkeeper for a long-term care facility in Cuba, Missouri, who stole funds from nursing home residents has been sentenced to concurrent seven-year terms in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Tammy F. Conaway pleaded guilty February 1 to one count of abuse of a Medicaid recipient; one count of forgery; and one count of stealing by deceit.

Following the sentencing, Conaway was placed in the shock incarceration program where she will serve 120 days before being considered for probation. Conaway was taken immediately into custody to begin serving her 120 days.

Crawford County Circuit Judge Sanborn Ball will review Crawford’s case on May 1 to determine if she should be released on probation and pay restitution or serve out the remainder of her seven-year sentence.

In addition to stealing funds from nursing home residents at Cuba Manor, Inc., Conaway also forged signatures of facility residents and guardians in an effort to conceal her thefts.

Attorney General Chris Koster’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit led the investigation after the administrator called the Medicaid Fraud Hotline to report the suspected theft. Koster said citizens should report suspected Medicaid provider fraud or abuse and neglect to his Medicaid Fraud Hotline toll free at 800-286-3932, e-mail the complaint to [email protected] or complete a complaint form at the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud website.
