WICHITA, Kan. (AP) – A 12-year-old Wichita girl died last night after she was hit by a police car Friday night.

Investigators say the girl and a friend were crossing an intersection in south Wichita when she was struck.

They were not using the crosswalk.

Investigators say around 7 p.m. Friday the officer was driving his patrol car northbound on Broadway Street near Harry Street when two girls ran out into traffic in front of him. The officer struck one of the girls with his vehicle. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she later died.

Officials say the girls did not use the crosswalk at the intersection but instead crossed the street in the middle of the block. The accident is under investigation.
