Attorney General Chris Koster is suing a Kansas City wedding-venue provider for cancelling ceremonies and failing to offer refunds.
Koster says the firm owes more than $40,000.
Koster says the lawsuit was the result of more than 50 complaints filed with the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
In the lawsuit, Koster said that West Bottoms Hospitality, LLC and its owner, Ryan Ronney Crowell, contracted with consumers from at least September 2010 through April 2011, to rent out the historic Stowe Building in Kansas City’s West Bottoms district for wedding ceremonies and to provide related services, like photography.
West Bottoms Hospitality promised consumers the Stowe Building’s ongoing renovations would be completed in time for scheduled weddings and receptions, despite delays in the renovation process. Consumers were never told of these delays and the city eventually shut down construction after the company failed to obtain proper permits.
Koster says West Bottoms Hospitality has failed to refund consumers more than $40,000 for cancelled events. Koster is seeking injunctions prohibiting further violations of the law, as well as civil penalties and full restitution for consumers.
Koster is asking consumers who are unhappy after dealing with the company to contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Hotline at 1-800-392-8222 or www.ago.mo.gov to file a consumer complaint.
