KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – A medical examiner is scheduled to perform an autopsy to find out what caused a 16-year-old Kansas City girl to die in custody over the weekend.
The girl was found unresponsive at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Facility around 1:30 p.m. Saturday and was pronounced dead at Children’s Mercy Hospital a few hours later.
County officials say the girl reported that she did not feel well just before noon Saturday, and that staff checked on her several times before finding her unresponsive.
Authorities aren’t saying what she had done to be held at the facility since Feb. 10.
Police say the girl’s death is not being considered a homicide. A medical examiner was scheduled to perform an autopsy on Monday.
