(UPDATE) Twisters In Alabama Level Homes, Schools, Prison

The National Weather Service now reports at least 12 tornadoes in three states before 1:30 p.m. ET Friday.

Nine of those were in Alabama while two were reported in Tennessee. Another tornado caused minor damage south of Clinton, IL.

In Moores Mill, AL, a tornado caused injuries after people were stuck in rubble from a structure hit by the twister. Cars, trees, power lines and homes were all damaged by the tornado.

A tornado touched down in Harvest, AL, and possibly struck a school. Harvest is located in extreme northeast Alabama, close to Chattanooga, TN.

Media reports indicate that the Limestone Correctional Facility in Athens, AL, has taken a direct hit from a tornado. The facility was significantly damaged by the twister. There are conflicting reports as to whether anyone was injured.

Madison County emergency managers said in a statement that several houses were “leveled” in one neighborhood in the Walker Lane area, AP reported.

The storm also dropped golf ball-sized hail on area residents.

Local schools were on lockdown, and other school districts were dismissing classes early. More than 20 school systems say they are dismissing classes early Friday because of the possibility of severe storms.

Otherwise, officials say the bad weather could hit around the time schools normally dismiss for the day.

There was no immediate word on any injuries Friday. But the Huntsville-Madison County Emergency Management Office says ambulances are responding to neighborhoods near Huntsville. Broadcast reports indicated people were trapped in cars in the town of Meridianville.
