Cape Girardeau Considers Deer Hunting Within City Limits

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) – A committee plans to recommend that some deer hunting be allowed inside Cape Girardeau city limits.

The City Council will make the final decision at a meeting March 19.

The city’s Deer Management Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday night to recommend allowing deer hunting in the city with certain restrictions.

The vote came after about a dozen people spoke against the proposal.

The commission would allow bow hunting on private property, with the landowner’s permission. The hunters would receive special training and be supervised by the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Supporters say an increased number of deer in the city are causing traffic accidents and ruining landscapes.

Opponents say other methods of controlling deer should be explored.
