Missouri Western softball rolls to sweep of Central Missouri

The 13th ranked Missouri Western softball team continued to roll earning a double header sweep over the University of Central Missouri on Saturday afteroon. Keri Lorbert had seven RBI and went 4-for-8 helping the Griffons to 5-1 and 8-2 victories. Western improves to 19-4 overall and 4-0 in MIAA play.

Game 1: MWSU 5, UCM 1
Jackie Bishop continues to pitch lights out for the Griffons improving her record to 10-1 overall in the complete game victory. She struckout seven Jennies while giving up just two hits.

Last season Jenny pitcher Lacy Dixon pitched a no hitter against the Griffons but not today as Western pounded out 8 hits against her. She falls to 1-4 pitching five innings while giving up eight hits and five earned runs.

Western got on the board in the second when Kat Steponovich doubled in Maegan Roemmich giving the Griffons and early 1-0 lead. In the third Western tacked on three more runs getting four hits. Lorbert blasted her third home run giving Western a 3-0 lead then Roemmich scored on a foul ball by Steponovich.

Western  took a 5-0 lead in the fifth when Leah Steele doubled in Roemmich and Bishop shut the Jennies down the rest of the way giving the Griffons their 18th victory of the season.

Roemmich went 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Steele went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Medora West went 3-for-4 with the only run scored for the Jennies.

Game 2: MWSU 8, UCM 2

The Griffons took the second game of the day, 8-2, on the power of 12 hits and a four-run fifth inning. Annalee Rubio improved to 7-3 going six innings while striking out three and giving up two earned runs. She had a no hitter going into the sixth inning.

Missouri Western scored in the first (2), fifth (4), sixth (1) and seventh (1) innings, securing the doubleheader sweep against Central Missouri. Breanna Fleschner had two hits and scored three runs while Lorbert had three hits and five RBI. Steponovich had three hits and two RBI while Anding had two hits.

The Jennies were only able to score runs in the bottom of the seventh on the strength of back-to-back homeruns to left field by Nicole Norberg and Brittany Martin to lead off the inning.

The Griffons return to action on Wednesday, March 14 to take on non-conference opponent Wayne State (Neb.) Wildcats in a double header. First pitch is scheduled 2:00 pm from the Griffons Softball Field at the Spring Sports Complex.
