MWSU’s Bishop named South Central Region Pitcher of the Year

Missouri Western sophomore pitcher Jackie Bishop has been named the 2012 Daktroics NCAA Division II South Central Region Pitcher of the Year, it was announced Tuesday. Bishop was also named to the First Team for the second time in her career. The Griffons finished the season 42-13 and have won 40 or more games five times which includes the last two.

The South Central Region is made up of schools from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, Heartland Conference, Lone Star Conference and Great American Conference along with independents University of Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State.

The team is voted on by sports information directors of schools in the region. All first-team selections will appear on the national ballot for All-America honors.

Bishop continues to add to her list of awards garnering Daktronics NCAA Division II South Central Region Pitcher of the Year. Bishop was also named to the First Team. She was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Year as well as First Team all-MIAA. Last season Bishop was the MIAA Freshman of the Year and first team selection. Bishop is the first Griffon pitcher to earn South Central Region Pitcher of the Year as well as MIAA Pitcher of the Year. Bishop finsished the season leading the MIAA with a 24-5 overall record and 1.42 ERA. She made 29 apperances with 26 starts. She pitched 26 complete games throwing eight shutouts. She pitched 183 innings with 243 strikeouts which is a new MWSU single season record. She held her opponents to a .180 batting average and gave up just 37earned runs. She was named MIAA Pitcher of the Week four times. She had a career high 16 strikeouts against Pittsburg State on April 6. She has struckout ten or more batters ten times which includes her first seven.
