A soldier from Overland Park has died from injuries sustained in an enemy attack in Afghanistan. The Pentagon report indicates that 23-year-old Pfc Cale C Miller died May 24th in Maiwand, Afghanistan after his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device.
Miller’s family issued this statement:
“As he did throughout his life, his final act on this earth was selfless, and his sacrifice prevented the deaths of several of his battle buddies. Cale was a hero in everyday life, always putting others before himself, including giving his life so that others may live.”
In a news release, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback said he was profoundly saddened to hear of Miller’s death.
“He is a hero, and will forever remain in the hearts of the Kansans and the Americans for whom he gave his life serving. No words can assuage the bereavement felt by all those that loved Cale. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and loved ones in this difficult time,” Brownback said.
Miller was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He was a 2007 graduate of Olathe Northwest High School.
