One of the world’s largest coal producers, based in Missouri, says it will lay off about 750 workers in three states. It’s the latest setback for an industry struggling with regulations pushing utilities to cleaner alternatives for producing electricity.
Officials with Arch Coal Incorporated of Saint Louis say its subsidiaries will close three mining complexes — two in Kentucky and one in West Virginia. It is temporarily shutting down another complex in Kentucky and curtailing production at other operations in Virginia and the two other states.
Mining work accounts for some of the best-paying jobs in these areas.
