St. Joseph uses big eighth inning to rally past Omaha

The St. Joseph Mustangs rebounded from a loss at Clarinda Sunday as they scored eight runs in the eighth inning to rally for a 9-2 victory at Omaha Monday afternoon.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team struck first Monday in the fourth inning when Shane Segovia had a two-out single that scored Kris Koerper to make it 1-0.

It stayed that way until the seventh inning when Omaha finally broke through against Mustangs’ starter Aaron Baker.

The Diamond Spirit scored twice and led 2-1 after seven.

Kyle Simpson led off the eighth inning with a single for St. Joseph and Omaha pulled starting pitcher Ben Schilz.  The Mustangs then teed off on the Diamond Spirit bullpen.

St. Joe had six hits in the inning after collecting just three through the first seven innings.  The first eight batters reached base and scored.

Simpson and Segovia each had two hits and two RBI for the Mustangs, while Patrick Burkhart drove in two runs.  Mark Robinette, Tanner Lubach and Jake Kretzer had one RBI each.

Baker threw a complete game five-hitter as he allowed just one earned run.  He’s now 4-1 this summer as he struck out eight and walked three batters.

St. Joseph is back on the road Tuesday as they play at Sedalia.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and it’ll be broadcast on 680 KFEQ.
