Another day, another filibuster, this time killing the Senate’s so-called “Disclose Act,” which would require the release of the names of any individuals and organizations that donate more than ten thousand dollars to a federal political campaign.

On MSNBC’s “Hardball,” Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill took it personally, pointing out that unidentified donors have shelled out about eight million dollars so far in attack ads against her.

 

“I don’t think the Republicans want everybody to know who’s paying for these ads,” she said. “I think it would be very unpopular. I think the people of Missouri, if they knew who were paying for these ads against me, I think they’d be proud of the enemies I’ve made. I think it would get me votes.”

“Mark my words: if we don’t get transparency, if we don’t get antiseptic sunshine on the buying of American elections, there’s going to be a big scandal and people are going to go to jail eventually,” she said.

Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell (R – Kentucky) scoffed at the bill on the floor of the Senate.

“The purpose of this legislation is totally clear,” McConnell said. “After Citizens United, Democrats realized they couldn’t shut up their critics, so they went after the microphone instead, by scaring off the funders. The creation of a modern-day Nixonian enemies list is currently in full swing, and frankly the American people should not stand for it.”
