Journalist Dodges One Mass Shooting, Then Dies In Another

A sports journalist from Texas who survived one mass shooting in Canada, fell victim to a second in Colorado Friday.

Jessica Shawi narrowly avoided Toronto’s Eaton Centre shooting June 2.

In an eerie coincidence, Ghawi’s last entry on her personal blog was about witnessing the aftermath of that shooting.

The Huffington Post has published Ghawi’s Twitter activity during both shootings.

Ghawi said at the time that a premonition kept her  from staying longer at the food court at the mall in Toronto, and instead going outside.

Her parents have confirmed to a San Antonio television station that their daughter was killed in the mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado early Friday morning.

Twelve people have been confirmed killed, and 50 more injured, when a Colorado man unleashed tear gas or a smoke bomb and then opened fire at random members of the audience. The suspect, identified by news media as 24-year-old James Holmes, was taken into custody by police. The shootings took place at the Aurora Century 16 cineplex in Aurora, Colorado during the premier of the latest Batman movie.

Two people were killed and five others were injured June 2 when a gunman entered the Eaton Centre mall’s food court and opened fire. Officials in Toronto are still wrestling with the gun control issues involved, including the Toronto Star newspaper, which on Thursday published an editorial suggesting the city take action to avoid more shootings.

Meanwhile, there’s been a huge outpouring on Facebook as well.  An Aurora man, Chris Ramos, posted a photograph of his ticket to the premier.

“Tonight that was supposed to be a great night turned into a horrible nightmare,” Ramos wrote.

“I saw that shadow of evil and literally had blood of an innocent man on my hands. I am so lucky to be alive with my sister and friends.  I’ll never forget this night and the many people that were there with me.”
