Hotter than normal weather and the ongoing drought could devastate our butterfly population.  In less than a month we would normally expect monarch butterflies to flutter through Northwest Missouri on their way from Canada to Mexico.

But the Monarch Watch says flowers that should bloom in the fall are already done, and that could be a problem for migrating monarchs that need the nectar.  The Powell Botanical Gardens reports the lowest number of monarchs in a decade.
