On Saturday, October 6, Missouri River Relief will be hosting a river clean-up on the Missouri River in St. Joseph.
The clean-up runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, rain or shine. Clean-up headquarters will be French Bottoms Landing, next to the Remington Nature Center.
Volunteers, groups and families are encouraged to register at http://www.riverrelief.org/sign-up/. You can also show up the morning of the clean-up and register at the boat ramp.
Contact Steve Schnarr at Missouri River Relief (573.289.2077 or [email protected]) for more information. Event details and more at: http://www.riverrelief.org/event/st-joseph-missouri-river-clean-up-2012/
Volunteers will be shuttled out to trashy spots along the Missouri River by a flotilla of boats from Missouri River Relief, Missouri Department of Conservation, Burns & McDonnell and US EPA. Crews will clean-up their stretch of the river, bagging and gathering trash together to be picked up later by Missouri River Relief’s hardworking volunteer boat crews. Trash will be unloaded for proper disposal and recycling at Bishop’s Landing.
Volunteers will be supplied with gloves, trash bags, life-preservers and water. Each volunteer will get a t-shirt and reusable water bottle. You should wear work clothes (expect to get muddy), rugged mud boots or tennis shoes (no flip-flops!).
Long pants are suggested, as there is a lot of poison ivy on the riverbanks. Sunglasses, bug spray and sunscreen are suggested. After cleaning their stretch of river, volunteers will be shuttled back to shore where they’ll be served a complimentary lunch by the wonderful staff at St. Jo Frontier Casino. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to submit their favorite “trash treasures” for a Trash Contest.
