The mayor of the small southwestern Missouri village devastated by the same tornado that hit Joplin in May 2011 says he’s amazed by its quick recovery.

Mayor Denny White says Duquesne is about 98 percent cleaned up from the tornado.

The twister killed eight people and destroyed about 250 homes and businesses. White estimates 42 of the businesses have been rebuilt, as well as 150 homes. And some new businesses have moved in.

The mayor says $7 million from the state’s Workforce Investment Board greatly helped the recovery. The money brought in nearly 150 workers to help with the rebuilding. They’ll wrap up their efforts in December.

But White sayss the main reason for the recovery is the resolve of the village’s residents.
