Use Tax Opponent Urges Voters To Reject Both Proposals

Kenneth Reeder, Freedom PAC

Voters in Saint Joseph and Buchanan County are deciding whether to approve a use tax on out of state purchases not covered by a sales tax. Opponent Kenneth Reeder disagrees with supporters who say we would need a use tax to get our share of a federal Internet tax. He says if Congress does pass an Internet sales tax we can vote then on whether to approve a local use tax.

Reeder says his main objection is that the both the city and county versions do not include a sunset provision. Reeder predicts easy passage if the measure had a 20-year sunset clause. Supporters say the tax would generate about $3-million a year for streets and safety without adding to the taxes most people pay.
