KC Chamber Endorses Single-Terminal KCI Plan

The Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is backing a controversial proposal to consolidate the city’s airport into one terminal.

KCI opened 40 years ago – before security was the issue it is today.

The three-terminal configuration means much higher security costs at KCI compared to other airports.

The Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted unanimously to support the $1.2 billion single terminal plan. The proposal was based on studies showing the one-terminal concept will improve the operational efficiency, passenger safety and convenience, and provide room for growth.

Currently, the Kansas City, Missouri City Council is studying the plan to validate the goals, objectives, and passenger demand characteristics that will guide the design of a new, single terminal complex.

“While so many of us have loved KCI over the years, it’s definitely out-of-date and time for a change,” says Jim Heeter, president and chief executive officer of the KC Chamber.

Critics say the current configuration makes KCI one of the most convenient airports for travelers in the country, offering easy access to terminals and parking.

If the proposal proceeds, construction could start in late 2014 and be finished by late 2016.
