Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his 22-year-old girlfriend early Saturday and then drove to a parking lot at the club’s training facility where he killed himself in front of team general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel.
Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though they say Belcher and his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, had been arguing recently.
The two of them leave behind a three-month-old child.
After discussions between the league office, coach Crennel and the Chiefs captains, the team says it will play its home game against the Carolina Panthers as scheduled today at noon local time.
Kansas City police say a woman was shot about three miles away in the 5400 block of Crysler Avenue at about 8am.
The woman suffered life-threatening injuries from multiple gunshot wounds, and died later at a Kansas City hospital.
The team issued this statement at about 10 a.m.:
“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”
By early afternoon, more than 160 people had left comments and condolences on the team’s Web site.
