The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold a public awareness session Jan. 8 in St. Joseph on the permitting process that will be used for a proposed expansion of the St. Joseph Sanitary Landfill.

The department has granted the city of St. Joseph approval to investigate if the geology of the area is suitable for an expansion of the landfill.

A detailed site investigation work plan is being prepared.

The session will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers. Representatives of the department’s Division of Geology and Land Survey, Solid Waste Management Program and Kansas City Regional Office will be present along with representatives from St. Joseph Sanitary Landfill to answer questions during the informal discussion period.

The landfill is located at 9431 50th Road S.E., approximately 3.5 miles south of the St. Joseph city limits.
