Earl Weaver’s St Joe Connection

Earl Weaver Cardinals BWEarl Weaver was as famous for off the wall quotes as he was for his firebrand management style for the Baltimore Orioles.

Weaver died over the weekend traveling as part of a baseball-themed trek around the Caribbean, the “Baltimore Baseball Cruise.”

Early Saturday morning, the 82-year-old Weaver was on the last leg of this year’s week-long cruise when he complained of having trouble breathing.

Contrary to local legend, Weaver was not married at home plate at Phil Welch Stadium. According to an item on the St Joe Mustang’s Web site, Weaver did get married here in St Joseph, at what is now First Lutheran Church. He played second base that night in 1949 for the St Joe Cardinals notching three hits. Weaver, the legendary manager of the Baltimore Orioles, died over the weekend.

Some of his quotes might remind you of fellow Hall of Famer Yogi Berra.  We found these online:

“Coaches are an integral part of any manager’s team, especially if they are good pinochle players.”

“Don’t worry, the fans don’t start booing until July.”

“On my tombstone just write, ‘The sorest loser that ever lived.'”
