Shooting Sends One Teen To Hospital, Another To Juvenile Custody

SJPD patchA juvenile is in custody and another teenager is in the hospital after a shooting Wednesday night in the midtown area.

Commander Janice Rothganger of the St Joseph Police Department says officers received a 9-1-1 call at about 10:15 p.m. regarding a shooting. Rothganger says several officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of South 24th Street where they found 17-year-old Landen Rucker suffering from a gunshot wound to his back.

Rucker told police he was at his friend’s house in the 2400 block of Mary Street when another subject arrived. This person, described as a 16-year-old white male, had an on-going dispute with Rucker.

Rucker told police the suspect assaulted him, but he tried to avoid further conflict. However the suspect produced a handgun and Rucker was shot. It is believed that he was shot one time in the right shoulder and the bullet exited through his lower back. After he was shot, the victim walked to the address on South 24th Street, which is the home of another friend. Residents there called police.

Rucker was transported by ambulance to Heartland Regional Medical Center. Rothganger says his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Shortly before 11:00 p.m. the juvenile suspect was arrested without incident near his home in the 2700 block of Jackson Street.

The investigation into the case is on-going. The suspect remains in juvenile custody. Because of his juvenile status the St. Joseph Police Department cannot release his name.
