Mary L. Leininger
1914-2013
Mary Lucille (Davisson) Leininger, St. Joseph, Missouri died Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Living Community in St. Joseph. Mary was born on December 14, 1914, in the rural home of her parents Joseph Nathaniel and Nora (Fisher) Davisson, just south of Falls City, Richardson County, Nebraska. Joseph owned and operated his family farm, and Nora’s father (George W. Fisher) owned a nearby farm. Mary graduated from Falls City High School in 1933 and subsequently graduated from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1935 (then a two-year women’s college), and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in 1937 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After teaching public school music in Hemingford and Unadilla, Nebraska, she married Vance Leininger of Fullerton, Nebraska on December 25, 1938, with whom she had shared music classes at UNL. The couple made their first homes in Stanton and Shenandoah, Iowa, and they moved to Washington, DC in 1942 when Vance joined the US Navy. After he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1948, the young family settled in Columbus, Nebraska where they raised their three sons. They moved to St. Joseph, Missouri in 1988 when Vance retired. They belonged to the Federated Church in Columbus, the First Presbyterian Church in St. Joseph, the Benton Club, and St. Joseph Country Club. Mary was a 50-plus year member of PEO Sisterhood – Chapter CH in Columbus and Chapter BP in St. Joseph – and she was a member of the Runcie Club in St. Joseph. She often hosted PEO meetings and enjoyed playing piano, and also enjoyed playing bridge. In Columbus during the 1970s, Mary became very interested and proficient in yoga. Friends who visited her in recent years had the pleasure of seeing her yoga photograph album, of which she was proud. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two older sisters, Esther Richardson, Falls City, Nebraska and Ruth Dunn, Lanham, Maryland. She is survived by three sons; Kurt, Malvern, Pennsylvania, Joel, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Ralph, Dayton, Ohio; four grandsons, Andrew, Peter, Jeffrey, and Benjamin; and one niece, Merrijeanne (Dunn) Mitchell, Lanham, Maryland. Memorial Services: 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory. A private ceremony is planned by the family in Columbus, where her ashes will be interred at Roselawn Cemetery, next to her husband of nearly 74 years. Francis Jean Paden
1925-2013
Francis Jean Paden, 87, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Veteran’s Home in Cameron, Missouri. Jean was born September 25, 1925 to Frank and Eva Paden in St. Joseph, Missouri. He graduated from Benton High School in 1943. Jean was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Phillipines, Japan and New Guniea from 1943-1946 with a Honorable Discharge. He worked at Quaker Oats for 41 ½ years, retiring in 1988 as a Machine Operator and in later years as a Mason. Jean was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church since he was twelve years old. He served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He belonged to Charity Zeredatha Lodge #189, Pony Express American Legion #359, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite and Quaker Oats Quarter Century Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Dean; sister, Charlotte and husband Clinton Pons of Florida. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elda; sons, Mike Paden (Carrie) of Columbia, Missouri, Doug Paden, St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter, Kathy McPheeters (Galen), Agency, Missouri; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Harold “Hawk” Stephen Schultz
1926-2013
Harold “Hawk” Stephen Schultz, 86, St. Joseph, Missouri died Friday, January 25, 2013 at Heartland Regional Medical Center. He was born November 26, 1926 to Glenn and Lucille Schultz in Corning, Missouri. Hawk was a member of the American Legion Post 11 of St. Joseph, Missouri, served in the Pacific during World War II with the United States Army, and liked listening to the St. Louis Cardinals games. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Schultz; and son-in-law, Jim Allaman. Survivors: son, Mike Schultz, St. Joseph, Missouri; daughter, Kathy Curnutt (Jack), St. Joseph, Missouri; step-daughter, Melinda Allaman, St. Joseph, Missouri; several grandchildren; sisters, Glenna Hankins, Mobile, Alabama, and Judy Jenkins, Iowa. Jerome Michael “Jerry” Tobin, 72, Maryville, Missouri, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at St Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri. Jerome was born Friday, January 03, 1941, in Maryville, Missouri to Thomas James and Edna Mae (O’Day) Tobin who preceded him in death. A graduate of Horace Mann High School and a Veteran serving in the US Air Force, he was a truck driver. Jerry was a member of the St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, Maryville.
Preceding him in death were his parents, an infant daughter Andrea Tobin, brothers Phil and Kenny, and sisters Marcella Wiles and Thelma Moyer.
Survivors include include brother Larry and wife Alicia Tobin, Maryville and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Tuesday, January 29, at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church with a visitation commencing at 9:30 AM prior to the mass.
