Iva LaVerne “Vernie” Boyer, 92, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Saxton Country Villa. LaVerne was born December 12, 1920 to Paul & Hazel Riggs in Walthill, Nebraska. On August 9, 1939, she married Floyd L. Boyer. She retired from the St. Joseph Police Department after 28 years of service. LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother. Survivors: son, Floyd “Terry” Boyer (Sharon), Cameron, Missouri; daughters, Dianne Dewey (Corky), Savannah, Missouri and Linda Arthur (Bill), St. Joseph, Missouri; sisters, Reva Goodwin, Moundridge, Kansas and Ruth Shea, Concordia, Kansas; sister-in-law, Judith Riggs, Arkansas City, Kansas; grandsons, Brad Boyer, Bryan Boyer, Kevin Arthur, Kraig Arthur, Kirk Arthur, and James Dewey; granddaughter, Julie Waters; sixteen great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services: 1:00 P.M. Saturday, Freeman Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, 2600 SE 144th Road, Stewartsville, Missouri 64490, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. 1927-2013

Betty Lou (Sultzer) Wise, 85, St. Joseph, Missouri passed away quietly on January 30, 2013 at a local healthcare facility. Betty was the only child of LeRoy and Bertha Leanna (Brady) Sultzer, born on October 30, 1927. She graduated from Lafayette High School in 1945. Betty married Lloyd L. Wise on April 20, 1946. He preceded her in death on October 17, 1990. Betty worked for many years in various factories before going to work helping her husband operate the Monarch Cleaners until his death. She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross for twelve years and was sent to fifty disasters in various parts of the United States, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Saipan. Some of her fondest memories were of the different people she had met and helped throughout the years of volunteering. She was awarded the Clara Barton Award in 2005, which is the highest reward the American Red Cross awards. She was also a member of the American Red Cross Red Hatters. Mrs. Wise was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her daughters, Jean Thuman (David), St. Joseph, Carolyn Barth, Gypsum, Colorado; five grandchildren, Stacey Hill (Eric), Debbie Steeby, St. Joseph, Nikki Thuman, St. Louis, Matthew Barth, Gypsum, CO, and Elizabeth Barth, Lakewood, CO; eight great-grandchildren, Josh Drake, Olathe, Kelsey Hopkins, Ft. Bragg, N.C., Corey Drake, Zach Drake, Emily Hill, Graham Hill, Hannah Steeby, St. Joseph, and Christian Barth, Lakewood, CO; and her lifetime friends, Glenn Rose Steeb. Services: 10:00 A.M. Marian E. (Spencer) Schottel

1933-2013

Marian E. (Spencer) Schottel, 79, Clarksdale died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at her home. She was born August 3, 1933 to Ralph Leonard and Hazel (Thornton) Spencer in Clarksdale. Marian married Wilbur Clarence Schottel on June 7, 1951. He preceded her in death on November 26, 2009. She worked at HD Lee as a packer for 13 years and later as a Scale house operator for Land Construction Company. Mrs. Schottel was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Cosby. She loved to play Bingo, cards and enjoyed bird watching and family activities. Marian had fond memories of her 2011 trip to Alaska with 15 family members. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wilbur Clarence; sister, Marie Spencer; brother, Darrell Spencer; and two great grandchildren. Survivors: children, Jill Vanderpool (Richard), St. Joseph, Ralph Schottel (Marla), Smithville, Wilma Swope (Dennis), Stewartsville, Kathy Kalin (Mark), Smithville, Warren Schottel (Linda), Stewartsville and Pete Schottel (Sherrilyn), Stewartsville; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; brother, Dennis Spencer (Norma); and sister-in-law, Olga. Ms. Porter was preceded in death by her father; and a brother, Dennis Lee Porter; Survivors: mother; sisters, Paula Porter, Sharon Hord (Elliot),St. Joseph, Missouri; brother, Randy Porter, St. Joseph, Missouri; nephew, Nicholas Hord; aunt, Norma Johnson, Albany, Missouri; and numerous cousins.
