Chiefs Release Matt Cassel

Matt CasselThe Kansas City Chiefs have released quarterback Matt Cassel.

The Chiefs traded for Alex Smith and signed Chase Daniel to bolster their quarterback depth chart. Now they’ve made Matt Cassel is a free agent.

Cassel started 47 games in four seasons with the Chiefs.

Former GM Scott Pioli acquired Cassel from the New England Patriots.

He notched 59 touchdowns and 44 interceptions in four years with the club and helped them team win the AFC West title in 2010.

Cassel was originally acquired by the Chiefs in a 2009 trade that brought him along with linebacker Mike Vrabel to Kansas City from New England in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

The Chatsworth, Calif., native, entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick (230th overall) of the Patriots in the 2005 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at USC and prepped at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, Calif.
