A third suspect has been convicted in the death of a Topeka man during a drug deal gone bad on the grounds of Topeka West High School more than two years ago.
Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor announced that Coty Rylan Newman pleaded guilty and was convicted Friday of Murder in the First Degree and Attempted Murder in the Second Degree.
The charges stem from the death of Matthew C. Mitchell on October 23, 2010.
Another man was severely injured during the incident.
Shawnee County District Court Judge Evelyn Z. Wilson accepted the Newman’s pleas and set sentencing for July 19, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. Two co-defendants have entered into plea bargains in the case. Another co-defendant awaits trial.
