The Northwest Missouri State baseball team split a double-header with Washburn Wednesday, dropping game one 7-2 and winning the second game 9-0.
Ryan Abernathy scored in the first inning to put Northwest up 1-0. Washburn answered by scoring four runs in the second and two runs in the third going up 6-1.
The Ichabods added one more run in the top of the fifth inning before Northwest answered back with a run of their own when Abernathy plated Paul Johnson on a sacrifice fly to center field. Johnson would be the final run the Bearcats would get as Washburn took game one 6-2.
Austin Warren was tagged with the loss in game one. Brian Schmiedt pitched the final three innings collecting four strikeouts and giving up only one hit.
Northwest had an offensive explosion in game two racking up nine runs on 14 hits over nine innings.
JJ Baccari hit a solid line drive to left field that started off the second inning for the Bearcats. Eric McGlauflin then stepped into the box and promptly hit his fifth home run of the season over the right field wall. Steven Garber later singled in Abernathy to go up 3-0. Northwest added one more in the second inning when Brandon Huske singled to score Abernathy.
The Bearcats struck again in the fourth inning with the long ball as Ryan Abernathy dropped his first home run of the season onto the road behind the left field wall. Huske scored later in the inning off a single by Johnson putting Northwest up 6-0.
The bats were not done yet. Johnson singled up the middle in the seventh inning to score Abernathy from second. Johnson later scored along with Baccari when McGlauflin drove a single into left field for the final run of the game as the Bearcats went on to win 9-0.
Rob Henricks earned his first victory of the season as he went seven strong innings giving up two hits and striking out seven. Nathanial Horton and Tyler Barth finished the final two innings securing the victory for Northwest.
The Bearcats move to 10-22 on the season and 8-19 in MIAA play. Head Coach Darin Loe’s team will hit the road for a three game series with Southwest Baptist starting Friday. Game one will be a seven inning contest with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with game two set to follow. The series finale will be played on Saturday with the start of game three scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
