A night of drinking in a camper at a Kansas lake with two 16-year-old girls will cost a 42-year-old St Joseph man six months in the Leavenworth County Jail.
A judge on Friday sentenced Byron Verning for his guilty plea to aggravated engandering a child and funishing alcoholic liquor to a minor.
On February 15, 2013, Verning entered pleas to the charges. On January 21, 2012, Verning took two sixteen-year-old girls from Missouri to Heims Lake in Leavenworth County, Kansas in order to spend the night in a camper.
Verning supplied alcohol to the minor females throughout the afternoon and evening while they were at the lake. A statement written by one of the victims was read to the court prior to sentencing. The victim’s parents also addressed the court regarding the impact of the crime on their daughter.
Leavenworth County District Court before Judge Gunnar Sundby suspended a one year term with the Department of Corrections for endangerment, but ordered him to serve six months in the county jail for the alcohol charged.
Verning was immediately taken into the custody of the Leavenworth County jail.
