Bearcats defeat William Jewell Friday, 13-9

riggertNorthwestThe offense picked up where it left off as the Northwest Missouri State baseball team put up 17 hits and scored 13 runs as they defeated William Jewell Friday 13-9 at Bearcat Field.

The Bearcats scored early plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tyler Durant scored Ryan Abernathy on a sacrifice fly to go up 1-0. Brandon Huske crossed home plate after Eric McGlauflin singled to left field. McGlauflin was able to trot home from first base when Eric Swain hit a home run onto the road behind the left center field wall to put his team up 4-1.

William Jewell added two runs in the second and another run in the third to tie the game up 4-4. The Bearcats broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Abernathy who hit a two run shot to left field for his third home run of the year.

Northwest and William Jewell traded runs in the fifth a sixth innings making the score 8-6 in favor of the Bearcats heading into the seventh.

Abernathy continued his hot day at the plate when he tripled to center field scoring Steven Garber and Charlie Krueger. Derek Meyer knocked in Abernathy with a sacrifice fly to right field to put Northwest up 11-6.

The Cardinals added one run in the top of the eighth inning bringing them within four runs. McGlauflin singled to start the inning off before Swain stepped up and smashed his second home run of the game off the batters eye in center field. Swain finished the game 3 for 5 with two home runs and four RBIs.

Rob Henrichs got the start for Northwest but got the no-decision as Blane Reutter picked up his second win of the season.

The Bearcats improve to 13-23 on the season and 10-20 in the conference. Head Coach Darin Loe’s ball club will hit the road for a three game series against Emporia State. The series will get underway Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. and game two set to follow. Game three is slated to start at noon on Sunday.
