Fleeing Murder Suspect In Serious Condition After Crash; US-59 Reopens

Wreck map
US-59 highway was closed at Parker Road for about three hours after a suspect fleeing from Kansas authorities crashed Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say two people were injured in the rollover crash at the south St Joseph city limits. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the suspect swerved to avoid spike strips placed in the highway and lost control of his Ford Explorer.

The vehicle rolled several times, ejecting the driver, and trapping a passenger in the vehicle.

Twenty-seven-year-old Brian Shields of Chanute, Kansas was seriously hurt and is being treated at the KU Medical Center. The passenger, 25-year-old Angell Autumn of Kansas City, Kansas, suffered what were described as minor injuries and was transported to Heartland for treatment.

Shields is the second suspect arrested in connection with the February murder of a Chanute woman whose body was found inside a home that burned to the ground in Neosho County, Kansas.

The accident blocked traffic for more than three hours along US-59 at about Parker Road at the south city limits of St Joseph. The road was reopened shortly after 6:30 p.m.
