Third Kansas Escapee Captured; Charges Announced Against Other Two

All three of the escapees from a Kansas prison are now back in custody.

According to a news release from the Kansas Department of Corrections, inmate Randy Ridens, Sr, 57, was apprehended on his way into Topeka, Kansas at 10:22 pm Friday. He was immediately transported back to Lansing Correctional Facility.

Meanwhile, Platte County officials announced additional charges against the two other escapees.

Sheriff Mark Owen met with reporters Saturday to lay out the timeline of the escape and standoff. Owen says negotiators established a dialogue with the two inmates in the home, who later left the home voluntarily.

Then Erik Zahnd, the Platte County Prosecuting Attorney, said both Allen Hurst and Scott Gilbert face 12 new felony counts each. Those charges include assault of a law officer, attempted kidnapping, resisting arrest, tampering with a motor vehicle and five counts of of armed criminal action. Zahnd says the pair face up to life imprisonment if convicted. They are being held in the Platte County Jail under five million dollars cash bond.

Zahnd says the pair fired shots at four different officers during the pursuit. Officials say they found the firearm in the stolen vehicle.

Zahnd says the kidnapping charge involves the mayor of Edgerton. According to the court documents, the pair drove up to the mayor, pointed a gun at him and told him to get in, an order he refused. Then the pair drove away, Zahnd said.

Any charges against Ridens will come from Kansas authorities. Hurst and Gilbert will also likely face escape charges in Kansas.

Zahnd and Owen gave credit to the officers involved in the pursuit and arrest of the pair who fled to Missouri, saying they showed “true heroism, refusing to yield in the face of multiple gunshots fired at them.

All inmates were being held at Lansing for convictions on charges of burglary and theft.
