Safety Town is a miniature town designed to introduce children to pedestrian safety, complete with sidewalks, crosswalks, streets, signs, traffic signals and replica buildings.
The goal of the program is to reduce preventable accidents.
Safety Town also familiarizes children with law enforcement officers, firefighters and other community workers. The St Joseph Metro Chamber helped cut the ribbon on this year’s program.
Children ages 5-7 will attend Safety Town for eight days, over a two week time frame, and will learn safety skills through classroom training and exercises taught by state-certified teachers. Law enforcement officers, teenage volunteers, and community leaders will further assist with instruction. Students take part in field trips to the local fire department and Bartlett Park, as well a spend lots of time “on the town”.
Enrollment is still available for some sessions, and is open to any child. Reasonable accommodations may be made for children with learning or physical disabilities. Children do not need to attend or live within the St. Joseph School District, and may attend multiple years.
