St. Joseph rallies past Nevada in MINK League opener

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs stayed unbeaten on the 2013 season as they rallied for an 11-9 victory over Nevada in their MINK League opener at Phil Welch Stadium Saturday night.

With Nevada leading 9-8 in the eighth inning, Kyle Simpson hit a two-run single to put the Mustangs ahead for good and move them to 2-0 on the season.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team scawandered two five-run lead Saturday night as they scored five in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead and they also led 8-3 after four innings.

The Griffons got a grand slam from Jack Goihl to highlight a six-run sixth inning as Nevada took their 9-8 lead.

Dixon Marble earned the win in relief for the Mustangs as he threw three scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

St. Joseph starter Brandon Simmons struggled in his debut as he gave up seven runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings of work.  The former Missouri Western standout struck out six and walked two.

Mustangs’ catcher Payton Scarbrough had a big hit to lead St. Joe’s 10-hit attack.  The sophomore-to-be at Missouri Western went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and a single.  He drove in two and scored two runs.

Simpson added two hits and three RBI, while Michael Schulze finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

St. Joseph is on the road Sunday when they travel to Nevada for another game against the Griffons.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ and 680kfeq.com.
