Mustangs snap three-game skid with extra inning win at Nevada

riggertMustangsThe St. Joseph Mustangs snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday night as they rallied to win at Nevada, 9-7, in 10 innings.

St. Joe’s summer college baseball team improves to 9-8 this season and 7-8 in the MINK League.

Joe Koerper had a big night for the Mustangs as he helped St. Joseph get off to a quick start with an RBI single in a three-run first inning and then he provided some heroics late.

With St. Joe trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning, Koerper hit a double to drive in pinch runner Jeremy Monty to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

In the 10th, Zac Johnson got on base with a one-out single and eventually scored on an error by the catcher.  Koerper added some insurance with an RBI single that drove in Kyle Simpson.

Koerper finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Simpson went 4-for-5 with one run batter in and three runs scored.

Johnson and Kris Koerper added three hits each as the Mustangs pounded out 16 in the win.

Brandon Simmons made the start for St. Joseph as he went 6.1 innings and allowed three earned runs and 11 hits.

Trey Gonsalez earned the win in relief, while Ethan Appleby picked up his second save with a perfect 10th inning.

The Mustangs now have two days off as they return to action Wednesday for a non-league game at Phil Welch Stadium against the Kansas City Monarchs.  The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m.
