Conservation agents in Northwest Missouri have cited 16 noodlers for illegally taking catfish by hand-fishing methods. In one case agents saw noodling on the 102 River in Andrew County and recovered several large fish. Agents cited another group for using an illegal hoop net. They also issued citations for littering and marijuana possession.
Conservation officials say noodling can harm catfish reproduction and populations by removing brood fish from nests. Noodlers caught in the act can be sentenced to as much as a year in jail and fined up to $1000. Anyone who sees illegal fishing activity can report it, remain anonymous, and receive a reward by contacting their local conservation agent or by calling Operation Game Thief at 1-800-392-1111.
