Fish Kill At Sugar Lake

MDC logo
RUSHVILLE, Mo. (AP) — There’s a pungent fish smell at Sugar Lake in northwest Missouri.

An apparent fish kill started Friday. Charli Lux says dead fish can be seen bobbing on the water’s surface.

She and her husband, Jeff Lux, have lived on the lakefront since 1981 and hadn’t experienced a fish kill in that time. She says she thinks the accumulation of silt in the lake and a recent lack of rain likely contributed to the fish deaths.

A Missouri Department of Conservation guide on fish kills says common causes are oxygen depletion, fish disease, thermal stress and pollution. The cause of the fish kill at Sugar Lake was not immediately available.
