The St. Joseph Mustangs rallied from a six-run ninth inning deficit Monday night at Clarinda, but St. Joe’s summer league baseball team still fell to the A’s 8-7.
With the loss, St. Joe drops to 24-16 and 20-16 in the MINK League. Clarinda increases its lead in the North Division to three games as the Mustangs have just six league games left.
St. Joseph scored in the first inning on an RBI double by Griff Gordon, but that was all they’d score until the ninth.
Clarinda took control of the game with seven two-out runs and they led 7-1 heading to the ninth inning.
That’s when the Mustangs rallied to tie the game.
Carlos Rodriguez led the inning off with a single, Griff Gordon double home a run and Zac Johnson had a two-RBI single in the ninth.
St. Joseph also got help from Clarinda as they committed two errors and a wild pitch by Jeff Harvill allowed two runs to score and tie the game.
Clarinda’s Bud Britt led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a double off Jarrod Miller and scored on a sacrafice fly by Tommy Hager with one out to win the game.
Dixon Marble started for St. Joe and allowed five runs on 11 hits. He struck out and didn’t walk a batter.
Gordon was the only Mustangs with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-3. St. Joseph only had seven hits in the game.
The Mustangs are back on the road Tuesday as they play at Sedalia. The first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 680 KFEQ and here on StJosephPost.com.
