Prosecutors say Michael Engstrom and his bride of two days robbed a gas station in Pawnee City, Nebraska on February 13, 2013.
He is charged with robbery and weapons charges in Pawnee County District Court. Officials say he made off with gasoline, merchandise, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Jury selection was expected to get underway Monday morning.
Engstrom was also charged with 21 counts in Johnson County, Nebraska stemming from the police pursuit and shootout that followed the robbery. Those charges include attempted second-degree murder.
His wife, Jamie Engstrom was sentenced last week to six-to-ten years in prison in Pawnee County and five years in Johnson County. She pleaded guilt to attempted robbery and child-abuse charges.
Authorities say Engstrom shot at officers three times and injured one of them. He was arrested after his gun ran out of bullets and his vehicle got stuck in a field near St. Mary, Neb.
Both are charged with murder and attempted murder in Shawnee County, Kansas for a shooting near downtown Topeka that claimed the life of Ricky Mitchell and injured Bridget Gakle.
They were married two days before the murder.
Michael Engstrom also faces a federal indictment on unrelated weapons charges.
