The City of Maryville has granted licenses to the city’s HyVee store to sell liquor by the drink. Those licenses include the authority to sell drinks on Sundays. The grocery store is among the first in town to apply for, and receive, the new Sunday licenses. The City Council approved those licenses in an ordinance passed in June.
Store Director Chris Wiltfong says their main focus is on their catering business.
“There’s a of times we’ll have caterings come in, weddings or what have you, and have to send them someplace else to get their beverages,” Wiltfong said. “With this license now, we’ll have an opportunity to be basically a one-stop shop for their catering needs.”
“I think this is just another opportunity to better take care of our customers, and the things they’re asking for. Liquor by the drink, or our catering, we just want to be sure to offer a great product, and full service, and do it responsibly as we’ve always done.”

Wiltgong says they have no immediate plans to offer liquor by the drink in their stores, although he says a number of HyVee stores, including one in Overland Park, are having good success offering beer and wine by the glass.
“I would say down the road we’re definitely looking at that, but nothing necessarily immediate.”
