Paternity Testing Leads To Charges In Sex Assault Of Mentally Impaired Woman

SJPD BW badgeArraignment was scheduled Friday for a St Joseph man charged with the sexual assault of a woman who was mentally impaired and not capable of making an informed consent.

Prosecutors filed one Class-C felony count against Tony Hughes on Monday. The sex acts described in court records allegedly occurred between October and December of last year.

Authorities say the victim became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl July 15. According to court documents, paternity testing concluded that the Hughes was the father.

Investigators say Hughes, 50, has a lengthy criminal history. In 1994 he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years for first-degree robbery and 20 years for armed criminal action.

He is being held under $50 thousand bond.
