Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State played a double-overtime match that ended in a 1-1 tie. The game was the first of two straight games played between the two teams. They will both match up again in Maryville, Mo. Friday night for a conference game.
In the first half, the teams battled in scoreless soccer for the first 20 minutes. Missouri Western soon broke the tie. Tara Russell put a goal in after sliding passed a defender to score her fourth goal of the year.
Northwest came right back three minutes later. In the 26th minute, Anna Calgaard put in a goal to tie the game at one. Both teams battled for the next period, but neither team could find the net. Two more overtime periods followed, with neither team scoring.
Russell had two shots on the night. Maddie Welde also had a shot as did senior Ashley Juravich, who recorded two in the game.
Sarah Lyle recorded five saves in the match. Sophie Malcom had two saves in her first start of the season. The teams will rematch Friday night.
